Hey everyone, Hirokichi here. Today’s Stock Analysis pick is Ibiden (TYO: 4062), a Japanese electronic components maker based in Gifu Prefecture.
The trigger was the company’s earnings release on August 4, 2026. Alongside its Q1 FY2027 (April-June) results, the company sharply raised its full-year guidance. The stock reacted the next day, August 5, jumping to the daily limit-up price and finishing as the top gainer on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime Market. Why did it get bought up this hard, and is this a name worth watching now? Today I’ll walk through Ibiden’s business, its latest earnings, and what’s next.
What Kind of Company Is Ibiden?
Ibiden is an electronic components maker headquartered in Ogaki City, Gifu Prefecture. Its business is split into two main segments.
The first is the Electronics segment. It makes “IC package substrates” used in PC and data center CPUs, as well as GPUs for AI and self-driving applications. An IC package substrate is the foundation that connects a semiconductor chip to the motherboard – an essential part for getting the most out of a chip’s performance. As generative AI servers keep demanding more processing power, they need increasingly sophisticated substrates, which is why demand for specialist makers like Ibiden keeps growing.
The second is the Ceramics segment, covering ceramic components used in automotive exhaust after-treatment systems, along with specialty carbon products (FGM) for semiconductor manufacturing equipment.
Looking at Q1 FY2027 results, the Electronics segment accounted for over 60% of revenue, with the rest split between Ceramics and Other businesses (construction, resin processing, etc.).

As this chart shows, the biggest swing factor for Ibiden’s earnings is how much the Electronics segment – tied to generative AI servers – keeps growing.
Stock Price & Valuation (as of the August 5 close)
Ibiden’s stock closed at 20,330 yen on August 5, 2026, up 4,000 yen (+24.49%) from the prior day and hitting the daily limit-up. Over the past year the stock has swung from a 52-week low of 6,592 yen (January 9) to a high of 27,480 yen (July 1), reflecting a volatile trading pattern.
Key valuation metrics as of the August 5 close:
– Market cap: approximately JPY 5.73 trillion
– P/E ratio (company forecast, consolidated): 67.62x
– P/B ratio (actual, consolidated): 9.97x
– Dividend yield (company forecast): 0.17% (annual dividend forecast of 35 yen, on a pre-split share count basis)
A P/E ratio (how expensive a stock is relative to its earnings) in the high 60s is quite elevated even by Prime Market standards, showing just how much growth expectation around generative AI is already priced in.
The company also announced a 1-for-2 stock split on August 4, with a record date of September 30, 2026. It carried out the same split ratio back on January 1, 2026, making this the second split this fiscal year. The per-share dividend forecast has been restated to reflect the split, but the real dividend amount (equivalent to 35 yen annually) is unchanged.
Earnings Check: Piling More Onto a Four-Year Record
Let’s start with the historical trend.
[Image: Revenue & operating profit trend (bar/line chart) to be inserted here]
FY2024 and FY2025 both saw declining revenue and profit, but FY2026 marked a recovery with revenue of JPY 416.2 billion (+12.7% year-on-year) and operating profit of JPY 62.0 billion (+30.3%). For FY2027, the company now expects an even higher level: revenue of JPY 550.0 billion and operating profit of JPY 127.0 billion (both per the revised forecast announced August 4, 2026).
The most recent quarter, Q1 FY2027 (April-June 2026), came in strong: revenue of JPY 123.2 billion (+26.4% year-on-year), operating profit of JPY 26.9 billion (+52.4%), ordinary profit of JPY 27.5 billion (+57.8%), and net profit of JPY 17.9 billion (+40.8%). The operating margin also rose from 18.1% to 21.8%, showing the underlying earnings power is genuinely improving.
Alongside this earnings release, the company revised its full-year FY2027 guidance upward.
[Image: FY2027 guidance revision, before vs. after (bar chart) to be inserted here]
Ordinary profit guidance was raised 41.1%, from JPY 90.0 billion to JPY 127.0 billion, and net profit guidance was raised 44.8%, from JPY 58.0 billion to JPY 84.0 billion. Versus last year’s ordinary profit of JPY 60.8 billion, that’s a 2.1x increase – piling even more onto what was already a four-year record profit forecast. Looking at the Electronics segment alone, operating profit guidance was raised from JPY 75.0 billion (as of May) to JPY 110.0 billion, which the company breaks down as: JPY 26.5 billion from pricing/mix improvement, JPY 3.0 billion from higher sales volume, JPY 2.0 billion from FX, and JPY 3.5 billion from productivity gains.
Two caveats are worth keeping in mind. First, FY2026’s net profit of JPY 63.7 billion included a one-time gain of JPY 34.5 billion (after-tax equivalent) from the sale of cross-shareholdings (shares held to maintain business relationships with partners). Strip that out, and the underlying growth from core operations looks even stronger than the headline number suggests. Second, against the newly revised full-year guidance, Q1 progress rates were 22.4% for revenue and 21.2% for operating profit – both just shy of the simple 25% quarterly benchmark. The results themselves were solid, but this isn’t necessarily a pace that’s crushing the full-year guidance.
What’s Next: A JPY 500 Billion Bet to Grow AI Substrate Capacity 2.5x
The company has laid out plans to invest a total of JPY 500 billion over the three years starting FY2026 to expand IC package substrate production. Roughly JPY 220 billion will go toward the Kawama plant and about JPY 280 billion toward additional investment at the Ohno plant, with new capacity coming online in stages starting in FY2027. Through this investment, the company aims to expand AI substrate production capacity to about 2.5x current levels by FY2028.
Stabilizing operations at the Ohno plant, which began mass production last year, is also contributing to the near-term margin improvement. Generative AI server investment still looks to be in an expansion phase, and Ibiden appears to be making a deliberate call to aggressively add capacity while the “build it and it sells” environment continues.
Outlook: Bull and Bear Cases
On the bullish side, three points stand out.
(1) Demand for generative AI server IC package substrates keeps expanding, at a pace that’s allowed the company to raise full-year guidance quarter after quarter.
(2) Stabilizing operations at the Ohno plant are helping absorb fixed costs, pushing the operating margin up from the high-teens to the low-20s.
(3) The JPY 500 billion capex plan to expand AI substrate capacity roughly 2.5x by FY2028 shows the company is already positioning for the next leg of growth.
On the bearish side, a few things are worth watching.
(1) The Electronics segment reportedly has high revenue concentration with a small number of major customers, so a shift in their production plans or sourcing strategy could swing results.
(2) Large-scale capex only pays off if demand keeps up as expected – and Ibiden has seen utilization rates and earnings deteriorate after big investment cycles more than once in the past.
(3) A P/E in the high 60s and a P/B near 10x reflect a valuation that’s already pricing in a lot of growth, which could invite profit-taking once the pace of upward revisions slows.
Personally, I like the direction of a company supporting the generative AI substrate growth story from its base in Gifu. That said, given how sharply the stock has already moved in a short period, my honest take is that I’d rather watch the next earnings report and AI demand trends closely, rather than chase the stock higher from here.
Summary
Riding the tailwind of generative AI IC package substrate demand, Ibiden sharply raised its FY2027 guidance on August 4, 2026. The stock responded with a limit-up move the next day, topping the Prime Market’s gainers list. With a JPY 500 billion capex plan already underway to capture future growth, the company’s direction looks bright. That said, the stock has already run up significantly, and both its P/E and P/B sit at elevated levels. Please weigh both the bullish and bearish points here and make your own call at your own pace. Take care of yourselves, and see you in the next one!
